The Mexican Government has a long history of mistreating and ommitting the voices of the indigenous peoples that live within the State's borders. In many ways the character of indigenous struggles in Mexico are very different to those in Australia but in others the histories (past and present) of genocide are alarmingly similar.
The Cucapa Nation of Baja California are denied fishing permits which no only denies them the right to continue a tradition which dates over 9,000 years, but also attacks their very survival as a people.
From the 28th of Feburary through to early May a resistance camp on Cucapa land is planned. It is being organised by comrades adherents of the Other Campaign in northern Mexico and the United States.

This proposal was read at the Encuentro with the Zapatista Communities and the People of the World in Oventic on January 2nd 2007 in the plenary session for the Intergalatic Encuentro as a proposal for atheme to the Intergalactic and a Global Call to Action. The following link will take you to several reportbacks, minutes and analysis by MASN members who were present at the recent Gathering of Zapatistas and Peoples of the World in Oventic, Caracol II, Chiapas. The gathering, which occured between the 30th of Dec and 2nd of January marked the anniversary of the EZLN uprising in 1994. The event covered the following themes: autonomy and governance, la otra education, la otra health, womyns organising, la otra communication, art and culture, la otra commerce and the struggle for land and territory. In recent years mexico's autonomous social movements have provided inspiring examples of anti-capitalist resistance, from the indigenous Zapatista movement entering its new phase with the ' Other Campaign ' building a network of struggles to the uprising in Oaxaca. Come and learn about these struggles and participate in discussion. We will be screening the ' Seige of Atenco ' and a short film interview with a participant in the Atenco struggle as well as other films.
Organised by Melbourne - Mexico-Australia Solidarity network ( MELB-MASN )
We will be screening a number of short films about the zapatista movementaand discussing the new phase of the ' Other Campaign'. We hope to learn from these and discuss making the 'Other Campaign on An Other Continent'
