On Tuesday 24th October around 60 students, teachers, indigenous community members, representatives from various social movements and one recognisable undercover cop gathered in the University of Guadalajara’s Adalberto Navarro Auditorium for the State Indigenous Congress. The marginalization and degradation of Mexico’s indigenous people penetrates every level of social interaction here in the city, something that was made painfully aware to me as I noticed three elderly indigenous women, wrapped in their rainbow-coloured shawls, seated silently in the middle of the auditorium. Its so much more common to see women like them sitting on the ground outside churches, government buildings, Burger King – hands outstretched for money – that, shamefully, I was surprised by their presence.

URGENT BREAKING NEWS: OAXACA UNDER ATTACK |

Last night the PFP (Federal Preventative Police) stormed Oaxaca City, taking the Zocalo by use of extreme violence, gases and water tanks. Government security departments are saying the operation involved some 1500 units and that they were unarmed, but we have reason to believe that this is a lie, that in actual fact there were around ten thousand armed forces mobilised. Yesterday in Oaxaca city alone there are 3 confirmed deaths by independent media, todays mainstream news reports deny this. A teacher, a nurse, and a 12 year old child were killed by federal police forces. Comrades in Oaxaca report that around 40 people were detained unofficially and taken to the military zone, Ixcotel were they were tortured and brutally beaten. This morning it is rumoured that 20 were released without charges or record of being detained. On the 28th in the afternoon barrickades in suburbs and towns near the capital were attacked by thousands of armed plain clothed politce, PRI party members and Porros (youth hitsquads paid by those in power to infiltrate universities and undergo low grade paramilitary activities). Brad Will from Indymedia New York and a teacher were killed, dozens wounded and there remain more murders of civilians to be confirmed. This morning the PFP continue to control the centre of the city. The APPO (asemblea popular del pueblo oaxqueño) has called a mega march from various points in the city for this afternoon.
