The Other Campaign in Culiacan, Sinaloa´s capital city. 9th-10th October.
In the afternoon we headed to the state capital, Culiacan. It’s a flat unimpressive city, with fame for its open and friendly people. In Lombardo Toledano, a poor suburb, we met on the basketball fields. |

Dautillo is a sleepy fishing town on the banks of a salt water lake, an hour from the state capital. As we pull into dusty Dautillo the stench of rubbish from the open tips that line the road and the attack of mosquitoes were astounding. These are among the central problems that the locals would highlight in the meeting that followed. |

In the afternoon the caravan arrived in Mazatlan, an important commercial port and tourist destination in the state of Sinaloa. We head to the Autonomous University of Sinaloa´s marine biology faculty on the harbor front for a meeting of adherents. As an introduction, local collectives spoke about the repression they have experienced not only from the government but also from within the left, highlighting the experience of many students of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa whose history of left activism has been used by many as a spring board for personal political careers. |

Today’s first event happens just across the border of Sinaloa. We pass hours of wetlands, lakes, diverse birds and endless palm trees before arriving in the tiny seaside town of Teacapan. Here in the town’s small kiosk women and men speak about the threat of expansive, destructive tourism projects in the region which would greatly affect the local fishing business and the environment. |
