The Mexican Government has a long history of mistreating and ommitting the voices of the indigenous peoples that live within the State's borders. In many ways the character of indigenous struggles in Mexico are very different to those in Australia but in others the histories (past and present) of genocide are alarmingly similar.
The Cucapa Nation of Baja California are denied fishing permits which no only denies them the right to continue a tradition which dates over 9,000 years, but also attacks their very survival as a people.
From the 28th of Feburary through to early May a resistance camp on Cucapa land is planned. It is being organised by comrades adherents of the Other Campaign in northern Mexico and the United States.
Watch this space for updates.

Today the EZLN celebrated its 23rd anniversary! The Otra Campaña continues its journey through the northern states of Mexico, passing this historic day in one of its earliest hubs. In the Casa del Doctor Margil, which was a safe house for the formulative early organisation of the EZLN a plenary was held to commemorate the anniversary. In Monterrey, today a souless city famous for its social injustice, over 37 years ago the Fuerzas de Liberacion Nacional (which later became the EZLN) was formed. One of its secret bases was for many years, the house/museum where the plenary was held today. The Frente Popular Francisco Villa Independiente, Unidad Nacional de Organizaciones Populares Independientes, UNIOS, the Partido de los Comunistas and the Comision Sexta of the EZLN, all Mexican adherents to the Otra Campaña (Other Campaign) participated in today`s event. |

Every indigenous nation that we have met on this short journey around the state of Sonora is fighting to continue living on its native lands. They face the threat of displacement, pollution from transnational projects on their doorsteps or extreme poverty that forces indigenous peoples to migrate to the city or to the USA. “We have seen anger and a feeling of helplessness,” says Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos, summarising the Other Campaign’s first journey around the north-western states. Moreover, the indigenous nations of Mexico are ignored and forgotten, or, as we learnt in Sonora, their very existence has been denied by the government. |

On Tuesday 24th October around 60 students, teachers, indigenous community members, representatives from various social movements and one recognisable undercover cop gathered in the University of Guadalajara’s Adalberto Navarro Auditorium for the State Indigenous Congress. The marginalization and degradation of Mexico’s indigenous people penetrates every level of social interaction here in the city, something that was made painfully aware to me as I noticed three elderly indigenous women, wrapped in their rainbow-coloured shawls, seated silently in the middle of the auditorium. Its so much more common to see women like them sitting on the ground outside churches, government buildings, Burger King – hands outstretched for money – that, shamefully, I was surprised by their presence.
