At 5pm on May 5th a group of Sydneysiders gathered yesterday in front of Australian icons the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge to send a message of solidarity to the Other Campaign in Mexico and around the world, to the hundreds who were arrested, deported, tortured and raped in San Salvador Atenco on the 3rd and 4th of May 2006 and to our comrades who remain imprisoned under bogus charges which further demonstrate the injustice and impunity that the Mexican Government so flagrantly shows the whole world. |

On the 16th of February the Latin American Solidarity Network (LASNET) and Mexico-Australia Solidarity Network (MASN) took to the streets together and in solidarity with our comrades in Chiapas and all over the World. The action formed part of two days of international actions in solidarity with Zapatista communities. So far actions in Greece, Spain, Cataluña, Euskal Herria, Argentina, Uruguay and several in Germany have been reported as part of the International Days of Action. In Mexico City and San Cristobal de las Casa, Chiapas pickets at Café de la Selva, a café that commercialises coffee produced by an organisation currently in conflict with the zapatista community 24 de Diciembre, occurred on the 9th of February. |

Fox will not attend G20 in Melbourne: Decisive vote today in Mexican Parliament |

Today Mexican Parliament denied Mexican President, Vicente Fox, permission to visit Australia and Vietnam for free trade negotiations this month. It was a decisive vote, 258 against, 187 for, with 6 absentions. Members of Fox´s party, the PAN, argued that the current situation in Oaxaca is a small problem and that the "fantastic" results of free trade in Mexico are reason enough for Fox to enjoy one last round the world jaunt during his term as President. For Australian organisers, Fox being denied passage will probably put a smile on one´s face. It`s certain that Mexico will send a delegation, however in true free trade organising tradition it is unlikely that details about Mexico´s participation in the G20 negotiations will be made public. |
